Asia’s Next Top Model S3: And we’re down to just two Filipinas

Monika Sta. Maria got best photo again for Week 5

image

While Franchesca Lagua becomes the first Filipina casualty in the show

asntm3a Since Asia’s Next Top Model S3 is a competition with only one winner in the end, weekly eliminations are inevitable. And it was only a matter of time before the first of three (3) Filipinas in the show will be shown the exit door. Episode 5 became the curtain call of Franchesca Lagua, the first to be booted out from Team Philippines.

And while another Filipina – Monika Sta. Maria – continues to slay the others by winning Best Photo for the second consecutive week, the removal of a best friend has left her in tears.

This episode was all about close-up shots and somehow, the catalogue-ish appeal of Franchesca spelled doom for her right from the start of the hour. In the end, she was actually in the bottom two together with another Filipina, Amanda. The latter, however, showed guest judge Daniel Mananta her true anger (which the Indonesian celebrity was forcing out of her in an earlier challenge) that pushed the utterance of the ‘F’ word while she was unleashing a mouthful. Interestingly, that reaction saved her from getting the ax.

image

In anger, Amanda (right) mentioned the 'F' word while bursting out in anger at the judges. It worked in her favor as Franchesca (left) was left out in the cold.

Episode 6 will be about running out of luck and having an age crisis. As to which girls these phrases will be attributed to, you’ll need to watch tonight. ;-)

Below is a teaser of the next.

MPE2015 and SM Markets: Fashion and Creativity using a Greenbag

Miss Cagayan de Oro City Beatrice Alvarez (right) and Miss Guinobatan, Albay Jian Cayla Salazar placed 1 and 2 during the Greenbag Fashion Show Challenge of MPE2015 and SM Markets

mpe20151 There really is no accounting for taste, especially when it involves fashion and aesthetics.

In the recent Greenbag Fashion Show Challenge of Miss Philippines Earth 2015 and SM Markets, the objective was simple: create an outfit using the eco-friendly bags of the supermarket chain. And all the candidates, together with their handlers and sewers, coordinated in coming up with a variety of get-ups that went from simple and flirty to downright traditional (or Filipinina if you will).

As expected, the ones who ruled the event were those who wore tastefully-made originals that made use of the barest accessories and went all-out to making the greenbags the star of the creation. Miss Cagayan de Oro City Beatrice Alvarez wore a black two-piece dress that utilized all the available eco-greens for the butterfly cut-outs that were sewn into the same. The result is a winner. It topped all the presented designs.

2nd Placer Jian Cayla Salazar of Guinobatan, Albay went for a black one-shoulder cocktail number that was cleanly-executed and fashionably worn by her.

By now, Mr. Global Philippines 2014 Joseph Doruelo will be on his way back to Manila after a three-week stay in Thailand where he met up with various modeling agencies, did a few photoshoots in Phuket, Ao Phang Nga National Park, Khaoyai & Hua Hin, and established his interest in possibly penetrating Thai showbiz. He even started learning how to converse in Thai.

The guy is a hard worker. And it is never hard to fall for his work ethics and courteous ways. I even made some efforts to hook him up with my Thai-Pinoy contact who will in turn introduce him to a couple of important people working for a major TV network.

Joseph is returning home to fulfill some previously-set commitments in the coming weeks ahead. I’m sure he will set foot in the Land of Smiles again by late May or early June. By then, the projects he is hoping to materialize will have already been in motion.

Let’s wish him the best, dear readers! ;-)

Miss Mun. of Casiguran, Athena Mae Imperial before she won Miss Philippines Earth 2011

Athena Mae Imperial will go down the history of Miss Philippines Earth as its most critically-panned titleholder and also the one who claimed victory in the only edition of the contest with the toughest cuts in any previous or succeeding years. As if that’s not enough, her eventual placement in the Top 4 of Miss Earth 2011 as Miss Water added fuel to the already blazing fire of endless potshots. Here is a girl who had the right smarts for the title, but was not able to meet the physical expectations (or standards, if you will) of pageant fans and followers in terms of being fully- deserving for the achievements that she earned for herself.

But Athena managed to survive a tempestuous year. Let us now look back at some of the videos that will remind us again of her reign, with the last one showing her latest career as a Field Reporter of GMA News TV.

Below is an interview with Athena right after her crowning as MPE2011.

Angela Villanueva Yagaya is only 18 years old, a native of Sibalom, Antique and a student of Tourism Management at the Univeristy of Antique.

During the recently-concluded Reyna ng Aliwan 2015 at the CCP Complex Grounds, this 5’9″ mixed-race (Fil-American) beauty made heads turn. She literally stood out in the line-up of candidates for the crown because of her skin color. But more than that, she was also noticed for having smooth moves onstage that can be improved for future endeavors in either modeling or beauty competitions.

Where can you see her shining more, dear readers? The catwalk or the pageant ramp?

The image above is how Bb. Pilipinas International 2015 Janicel Lubina looked during the photoshoot with Doc Marlon I blogged about yesterday.

And I’m really digging how our Queen J.Lu can shift her looks from one shot to another. There is a natural way by which she projects for the camera and feeds an assortment of aura and appeal. Just like in the image above, she resembles a more gorgeous version of actress Lovi Poe. Her smile refreshes. And those eyes, they pierce like arrows of love from Cupid.

Grab your copy of L'Officiel Manila's maiden issue. It will become a collector's item soon!

L’Officiel Manila is the country’s first international fashion magazine. And its maiden issue will be made available starting today.

L’Officiel Manila is going to offer more than just the usual fashion images. I reckon that the content will be a step above avant-garde and is expected to be extra up-to-date than its competitors.

Here is the pitch of its publisher, Rogue Media:

Rogue Media is proud to unveil L’Officiel Manila, the Philippines’ first international fashion magazine. First published in Paris in 1921, L’Officiel is one of the oldest and most influential magazines in the fashion world today. L’Officiel Manila, the 25th international edition, is led by editor-in-chief Pam Quiñones, creative director Miguel Mari, and executive editor Vicky Montenegro. “L’Officiel Manila will be very different from all the local women’s fashion magazines,” says Maricris Zobel, one of the chief principals of Rogue Media, along with publisher Felipe Cruz and editorial director Paolo Reyes. “It’s very fashion forward, cutting edge, and fresh. This title, just like Rogue Magazine will take the Philippine media industry to new heights.”

Grab a copy of L’Officiel Manila now before the maiden issue gets sold out. ;-)

Bb. Pilipinas 2015 Official Candidate Neesha Murjani is now a full-pledged graduate – diploma, toga, march and all!

neesha21 Bb. Pilipinas 2015 Official Candidate Namrata Neesha Murjani is feeling pleased and fulfilled nowadays. While she is already considered a B.S. Biology graduate of Cebu Doctors Hospital during the Summer of 2014, it was only last April 26, 2015 that she made her graduation march in full regalia.

I was a summer grad last year and because of that I wasn’t able to join the April 2014 graduates in marching. I felt incomplete receiving my diploma knowing that I didn’t wear a toga (YES, that means a lot to me.) Today, I took the chance to join the 2015 graduates and I finally feel complete! It feels so good to walk that aisle, wearing a toga and see my parents smiling. College was definitely a roller coaster ride. You know that kind of ride where you don’t want to ride again.

Congratulations, Neesha! While your Bb. Pilipinas bid was not met with the results you originally aimed for, there are still greater career opportunities heading your way. It may not be in the form of a beauty title, but the rewards will be just as meaningful, I’m sure. ;-)

As we all know by now, our former blue crown wearer will be hosting the station’s reality artista search (“Starstruck“) before finally filling in the shoes of the lead in a planned remake of “Marimar” for the nth time.

Bb. Pilipinas Intercontinental 2015 Christi Lynn McGarry, very tall as she is, still stood out among the five ladies so she must have worn ordinary heels during the shoot to put some balance in the head lines. And I love her look during the same – exuding a temptress vibe that was beautifully captured by the lensman, even in her selfie. :-)

Today, I will be flying to Bacolod City to attend and judge the Pasalamat Festival Queen 2015 contest in La Carlota City which will have its finals tonight.

wpid-pfq2015-logo2.jpg.jpeg

Pasalamat Festival in La Carlota City, Negros Occidental, Philippines is based on the tradition of giving thanks to gods of elements after a bountiful harvest by the ancient of Buglas. The city takes on a festive atmosphere during the weeklong celebration, which culminates with a Mardi Gras like parade of floats and caricatures. Dancers flirtatiously move to the rhythm created by the drumbeaters using carabao leather drums and percussion instruments made out of indigenous materials. – Ed Joven/bacolodtravelguide.com

MWP2015 or BBP2016 for Carmella Michelle Dolmer?

$

imageimageWhen my fellow blogger Joyce Ann Burton-Titular sat in the panel of Daragang Magayon 2015, she and the other judges were practically unanimous in picking Carmella Michelle Dolmer as the winner. She even went as far as saying that the young lass would be a perfect fit for Miss World Philippines 2015 as a possible successor for the reigning Valerie Weigmann. Now I’m not one to go against the thought because she has loads of potential, aside from having a good talent in dancing.

And since the handlers of Carmella are associated with Aces & Queens (the same team who prepped up Marvi Ann de Lima for Bb. Pilipinas 2015 ), the likelihood of being taken by the same camp is a given.

Now the question is, will she suit up better for MWP2015? Or are the prospects of taking part in Bb. Pilipinas 2016 looking more realistic?

Your thoughts, dear readers? :-)

The Powerhouse Dream Team of Misters/The Mister Filipinas Search

While it has already been blogged here before, Misters/The Mister Filipinas Search 2015 is now official. And with the team of professionals and pageant experts finally assembled to run this year’s edition, there is excitement in the air as the number of candidates promises to be bigger and better than the last.

Significantly boosted by the performance of three of the four 2014 titleholders – Neil Perez clinching the Mister International title in Korea, Adam Davies getting 3rd Runner-Up honors during Mr. Model International in the Dominican Republic and Joseph Doruelo making it to the Top 13 in Thailand’s Mr. Global – there is much to be thankful for and to give back. Pending the results of Mister Tourism International in Panama for Judah Cohen, let’s hope that he figures out well in the World Finals later this month.

Some of the popular books in the Nancy Drew series

Nancy Drew's 85th

Today’s Senti Special is going to be a lot different from past features because this is something my reading heart and mind look back to with such fondness.

Who’s with me on Nancy Drew? I grew up with this young detective and the Hardy Boys, as in finishing all the books in their respective series up until I graduated from High School.

While I wasn’t too wild about the movie version brought to life by Emma Roberts, my liking for Miss Drew never changed.

And on this, her 85th Birthday, here’s wishing that all her books be released again in exciting new book covers and spaced illustrations. The young people of today will definitely grow to like her as well. It’s like going back to basics.

Happy Birthday, Nancy Drew! :-)

Aimee, Monika, Franchesca and Amanda enjoy Boracay outside of the show

image You’d think that just because they took part in a TV reality search, lasting friendships cannot be genuinely formed. But not in the case of these Asia’s Next Top Models Season 3 contenders.

Monika Sta. Maria, Franchesca Lagua and Amanda Chan – all Filipinas – together with Aimee Rose Cheng-Bradshaw from Singapore are spending the long Labor Day weekend in Boracay where they continued their being best buddies long after filming of the 3rd season of the modeling search was over. Of course, we’re still approaching the halfway mark on cable TV and only one of them has been eliminated so far (Franchesca). Be that as it may, the four ladies have formed a strong bond among themselves and are now like true sisters.

By the time all ladies return to their normal lives by Tuesday, the good times may no longer be in full swing. The ties they have linked in between will remain tight, however.

And my lips are super-tightly sealed as to who the eventual winner of Season 3 really is. ;-)

Halimatu Yushawu (middle) was named Pasalamat Festival Queen 2015 at La Carlota last night. Flanking her are (from left): Mae Lourine Mercado (2nd Runner Up) and Lyzabeth Dilag (1st Runner-Up)

Your blogger and fellow judge MPE2007 Jeanne Harn

A fit and bright young lady of Filipino-Ghanaian descent was crowned Pasalamat Festival Queen 2015 during the finals of the beauty pageant held at the Town Plaza of La Carlota City in Negros Occidental last night. In a contest where the top winner was decided upon only during the final interview where the Top 3 were asked the same question, Halimatu Yushawu stood her ground and nailed her answer with such confidence and grace. 1st Runner-Up Lyzabeth Dilag was a nice come-from-behind placer who consistently got good scores from the judges with her quick wit as well. In fact, the two were separated only by a small 0.20 of a point after all the marks were tallied.

2nd Runner-Up Mae Lourine Mercado was actually the heavy favorite to win. But somewhere along the final question, she must have succumbed to nerves and dished out an answer that trailed the other two in terms of clarity and delivery.

The Top 3 Finalists before the dreaded ultimate Q&A

In the end, the five judges – Miss Philippines Earth 2007 Jeanne Harn, actor Philip Salvador, American-Mexican commercial model Garrett Zebley, La Union businesswoman Catherine Franco and your blogger – gave their one end nod to the candidate who gave the best reply in the end. And Halimatu Yushawu brought home the win.

The long but entertaining programme was hosted by well-loved showbiz sweethearts Tom Rodriguez and Carla Abellana, with performances coming from singers Gerald Santos and Darren Ong, stand-up comic and belter Donita Nose, plus the crowd-drawing loveteam of teen idols James Reid and Nadine Lustre.

Allow me to thank Tita Kitchie Benedicto-Paulino, Rep. Jeffrey Ferrer and his wife La Carlota Mayor Juliet Ferrer, Tita Marie Gozun and the Headwriting team Jojo Nones & Ryan Benitez for the opportunity to sit as one of the judges and also for the warm hospitality of the people of La Carlota and the personnel at Planta Hotel and Residences. :-)

Another Boom Pinili shot of Chanel

It’s already the 4th of May, and Miss Philippines Earth 2015 will be crowned in less than a month from now. May 31 to be exact.

While there are several favorites to do well among the earth warriors this year, there is one girl who still remains on top of the field as the solid pick to take the competition all the way – Chanel Olive Thomas, originally from Australia, but proudly representing San Antonio, Nueva Ecija.

In this post, Chanel shows us her experienced side as a print model in photographs expertly shot by lensman Boom Pinili. Her aura is very international. And it is one edge that she has over the others, not to mention her excellent communication skills and sleek runway skills.

image

And yet, another Chanel Olive Thomas shot from Boom Pinili

Can Chanel hold on to the lead tight enough to secure the crown and become our next Miss Earth bet? I have a feeling she can. While a back to back victory in the bigger pageant is an entirely different story, the more important thing is to capture the national title.

And that is where this Fil-Aussie beauty is pinning her undivided attention for now. ;-)

Since homecoming trips are musts for all our Bb. Pilipinas 2015 Queens, Miss Universe Philippines 2015 Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach had hers last Saturday, May 2. After arrival at the Laguindingan Airport, she headed straight to City Hall and paid a courtesy call to Mayor Oscar Moreno (see photo below) where Cagayanon folk dancers added a more festive spirit to the occasion.

Afterwards, she went to the Activity Center of SM City Cagayan de Oro for the Meet-and-Greet where her fans and supporters gathered to formally welcome her arrival. She had a fun time talking to them and even answering questions thrown in by the more excited ones.

A motorcade followed all around Cagayan de Oro City.
